[www.inewsguyana.com]A 27-year-old man from Berbice was today fined $30,000 with an alternative of three months imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Mohamed Ali pleaded guilty to an illegal departure charge which alleged that on September 23 at Springsland, Corentyne Berbice, he illegally departed Guyana for Suriname.

According to the defendant, “I made previous arrangement to fly to the United States (U.S) with family via Paramaribo Suriname, but I missed the ferry”.

Ali added that that he proceeded to Suriname via Springlands and spent three months in the U.S and upon his return at Timehri; he was informed that he was “wanted.” He was subsequently arrested and charged.  The man apologized to the Chief Magistrate stating that he was not aware that it is an illegal port of entry.
