Berbice men allegedly busted with 31 parcels of marijuana remanded

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Two Berbice men caught with marijuana in Georgetown were remanded to prison on Friday, March 13 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Twenty-two-year-old Faraad Hamid of Lot 315 McRae Street, Rosignol, West Coast Berbice and Mark Douglas of Number 3 Village, West Coast Berbice, both pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on Thursday, March 12 in Georgetown, they had in their possession 58.84 kilogrammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru told the court that on the day in question, ranks from the narcotics branch acted on information and followed the car from Sheriff Street, in the vicinity of Subs and Salads.

The Court heard that Hamid was the driver of PJJ 8009 and upon seeing the police he turned into David Street, Kitty.

The ranks were in an unmarked vehicle when they intercepted Hamid and as a result, they found a large white bag containing the prohibited substance, wrapped in 31 parcels.

Subsequent to the seizure, Hamid told the police “Mark gimme this fa bring down and he waiting fa someone”.

The matter was transferred before Magistrate Ann McLennan for report and fixtures on Monday, March 16.
