Berbice man killed in row over alcohol


A New Amsterdam, Berbice labourer is now dead following a row with a neighbour over alcohol.

Dead is 40-year-old Mark Griffith of Lot 49 Smithfield, New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

According to the Police, Griffith was on Sunday night picked up from a trench bleeding heavily from his chest and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital ,where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.

The Police said that Griffith’s sister, Samanda David, 44, claimed that her brother would consume alcohol and get into arguments with her and the neighbour known as “Smokey” on a regular basis.

She said on Sunday her brother was at home consuming alcohol all day by himself and about 15:00h she, him and “Smokey” began arguing over alcohol and food.

According to David, “Smokey” had a cutlass in his hands at the time, and she intervened and was successful in getting them to stop arguing.

However, about 10 minutes later, she was alerted that something had happened and when she rushed out of her house, she saw her brother lying in a trench bleeding from the chest.

Police have arrested the suspect.

Divisional Commander Jairam Ramlakhan said the suspect was under the influence of alcohol up to press time.
