[www.inewsguyana.com] – General Secretary (GS) of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Clement Rohee has accused the combined political opposition of trying to put Berbicians against the PPP, by creating the impression that the government is heartless by not wanting to reduce the toll fee of the Berbice River Bridge.

Rohee also rejected the assertion that the toll was reduced last year to facilitate the Party’s congress.

“They [the Opposition] are seeking to put Berbicians against the PPP. To put the PPP as a heartless bunch of ogres, who care nothing for the Berbicians, to cast us in that light, that we are heartless, we are inconsiderate, we don’t care about Berbicians,” the GS told a news conference on Monday, May 19.

The combined parliamentary opposition recently voted on a motion calling on Public Works Minister Robeson Benn to make the order, to reduce what it says are exorbitant toll prices for using the Berbice Bridge.

The motion was passed in the House despite strong objections by the PPP, which said the move was a political one and an attack on private investment.

“Most of the investors are Guyanese. We don’t see the Berbice River Bridge Company as a group of tyrants who just invested to rip off Guyanese,” Rohee said.

He further noted, “This thing about rates and fees and tolls is absolute nonsense. That is not the issue. The issue is to make the PPP look bad in the eyes of these persons who the PPP claims is its stronghold supporters. We have absolute confidence that the Berbicians will unmask the enemy and see the wolf in sheep’s clothing.”
