Berbice accident leaves constable, another in hospital

A police constable and his 26-year-old friend are now in a stable condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital following a collision with a motor car at the intersection of Main and Philadelphia Streets, New Amsterdam, Berbice on Friday evening.

Injured are motorcyclist, 18-year-old Police Constable 23554, Tofan Reid attached to the Anna Regina Police Station and his pillion rider, Jerry Hawker of Lot 45 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

Based on information received, at around 19:50hrs last evening, Reid and Hawker were travelling south along Main Street on motorcycle CJ1329 while a hire car, HC6430 being driven by a 31-year-old man of West Canje Berbice was proceeding west on Philadephia Street.

Inews understands that upon approaching the intersection, the hire car driver failed to stop, and as such collided with Reid and Hawker on the motorcycle. The duo were flung several feet away from the impact scene.

Onlookers reportedly rushed the young men to the medical facility where they were admitted. Reid is said to have a fractured left leg while Hawker suffered abrasions to his body.

The hire car driver is presently in police custody at the Reliance Police Station. (Ramona Luthi)
