Avinash bond at LBI destroyed by fire – millions of dollars worth of goods went up in flames

Millions of dollars worth of goods went up in flames late Saturday night to Sunday morning when fire razed a bond at La Bonne Intention, East Coast of Demerara (ECD) belonging to the popular Avinash haberdashery chain.
INews understands that the fire of unknown origin destroyed the bond despite the efforts of firefighters who arrived promptly at the scene to battle the flames.
During the blaze no injuries were sustained as the building was empty at the time.
However, it is suspected that this may have been an act of arson. No one had been frequenting the premises for many months except a security guard who would visit the bond ocassionally.
Meanwhile, a young man who lives near the bond stated that he had just returned home and settled inside of his house when he heard a loud “popping noise” once.
Shortly after he peered through his window and saw that the building was engulfed in flames.
According to him, he quickly contacted the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) for their assistance in containing the blaze.
INews was told that three fire fighting trucks arrived at the scene of the fire shortly after report(s) were made but could not control the blaze which had already spread rapidly throughout the building. (Kristen Macklingam)
