Villagers of regions 1, 2, 7 and 9 on Friday protested in front of the Amerindian Affairs Ministry over the Isseneru land issue.

According to the protestors, the land in Isseneru was taken away and given to persons to mine by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).

Toshao of Isseneru Lewis Larson says this is a battle they will never give up.

Larson says the issue in Isseneru is one that he does not want other villages to experience and that is why they will continue to protest until their voices are heard.

The Toshao reiterated that the Amerindian Act is weak and does not safeguard their rights.

He reminded that despite Isseneru being titled land it is being taken away without permission from the village.

On Wednesday August 7 the toshao led a protest outside of parliament hoping to gain the attention of the legislators.

Meanwhile, in response to the protest, Amerindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai says Amerindians must stop allowing themselves to be used as pawns.

Sukhai is of the opinion that the protest is politically instigated. She also debunked the claims of the land being taken away by the GGMC and given to private miners.

She also reminded that the issue is still before the court and the villagers must await a ruling.
