Alleged speeding driver granted bail for death of Pedestrian

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Delroy Welford, a Technician, of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara was today placed on $250,000 bail for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.

Welford pleaded not guilty to the charge before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine – Beharry. It is alleged that on November 07 at Mocha Main Access Road, East Bank Demerara, he drove motorcar PPP 9521 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of 45 – year – old Carol Overton.

The Court heard that on the day in question, the defendant was driving at a fast rate, heading north, when he collided with Overton, while trying to avoid hitting another car, which was driving in the Opposition direction.

Representing the defendant was Attorney – at – Law, Roger Yearwood, who in his bail application noted that Overton is not a flight risk and that he cooperated with the police during the investigation.

Yearwood told the Court that after the accident occurred, his client rendered assistance and took the injured woman to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Welford was ordered to report every fortnight to the Police until the completion of the matter and statements are ordered to be filed on November 28.
