6 Parties approved to contest General elections; 8 Parties for Regional Elections

nomination-2[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has approved six political Parties to contest the upcoming General Elections and eight Parties to contest Regional Elections scheduled for May 11.

The Parties that have been given the nod from the elections body are: A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change (APNU/AFC), People’s Progressive Party Civic, Independent Party (IP), National Independent Party (NIP), The United Force (TUF) and the United Republican Party (URP).

According to a GECOM advertisement place in local print media, the above six Parties and another two also received GECOM’s nod to participate in the Regional Elections.

The Organisation for the Victory of the People (OVP) has been approved to contest the elections for Region 4, Demerara-Mahaica. That Party has presented a list of 39 persons that are spread across the region.

The Healing the Nation Theocracy Party (HTNTP) has also acquired the approval of the elections body to contest the Region 4 Regional Elections with a list of 44 candidates.

With respect to General elections, the contest is expected to be mainly between freshly minted coalition – APNU+AFC and the PPP/C since all the others have indicated that they are vying to be the “third force” in the 11th Parliament.
