A Sophia resident was on Monday arraigned for the murder of bread vendor, Andre Alexander, when he appeared at the Sparendam Magistrate’s Court.
Shaquille Grant, 20, of lot 345 “B” Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on May 5 2017, at “C” Field, he murdered the father of two.
Grant was denied bail and remanded to prison. He is expected to re-appear on June 8, 2017.
On May 5, Alexander and his wife were reportedly at their lot 394 Section 4, “C” Field, Sophia home, in their shop when two men- one of whom was identified as Grant- approached on a motorcycle and requested three loaves of bread.
The pillion rider was reportedly paying with a $5,000 bill and while Alexander was in the process of making change, he [pillion rider] whipped out a gun and demanded cash from the man. Upon seeing this, Alexander’s wife ran towards their home and raised an alarm.
Her husband refused to cooperate with the perpetrators resulting in Grant allegedly grabbing the money from his hand and discharging several rounds in the process. One of the bullets reportedly struck the bread vendor to his chest. The duo then fled the scene.
The bread vendor was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital but subsequently died while receiving treatment.(Ramona Luthi)
