18-year-old miner shot as camp invaded, Venezuelans implicated

Police are investigating the circumstances in which an 18-year-old Guyanese miner was injured on Sunday afternoon after being shot at by a group of men –suspected to be Venezuelans- at a camp in the North West District.

Injured is Troy Joseph of Falls Top, North West District.

Based on information received, sometime around noon, eight suspects invaded the mining camp at Five Star, North West District and opened fire. Joseph reportedly received one gunshot wound to his left hip.

He was rushed to the Matthews Ridge hospital for treatment and is expected to the transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital sometime today.

This alleged invasion comes on the heels of an attack almost two months ago at a camp at Imataka on the Venezuelan side of the border which left three Guyanese miners dead.
