Duo remanded for carjacking; accused alleges police brutality

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Two men charged with stealing a car and replacing the number plate were both refused bail by Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday, February 20.

Taxi driver Marvin Samaroo, 45 of East Canje Berbice, and mason Krishnadat Ganga, 24 of Phoenix Park, West Coast Demerara were not required to enter a plea to the first charge, which alleged that on February 16 at Adelphi Village, East Canje, they stole motor car PPP 3149, property of Jonathan Ricknauth.

They pleaded not guilty to the second offence, which alleged that between February 16 and 18 at East Canje; they imitated number plate HC 3149 on motor car PPP 3149.

Police Prosecutor, Dinero Jones told the Court that Samaroo was previously convicted in Berbice. He objected to the duo being granted a pre-trail liberty, since the investigations are incomplete and there are other charges to be issued soon.

Meanwhile, an investigation was ordered by the Magistrate McLennan after Ganga complained that he was beaten and shocked to the scrotum by the Police. Ganga raised his foot and indicated his injuries to the Magistrate.

The unrepresented duo will make their next Court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on February 25.
