[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana National Women’s Hockey Team has been trimmed to the final 16 players who will represent the nation at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games being held in Vera Cruz, Mexico from November 15 to 23, 2014.

The team has been in training for several months and the final 16 includes six overseas-based players, four of whom are temporarily displaced to pursue their studies while the other two reside overseas.

The 10 players who reside locally, along with 6 reserve players have been training five days per week at the GCC ground, Bourda under the guidance of coaches Philip Fernandes and Peter De Groot.

Guyana opens its bid for a medal at this year’s games against the Dominican Republic on November 15.

This will be the first time that Guyana will face the Dominican Republic in international competition and should prove an interesting contrast of styles between the Guyanese midfield build-ups versus the Dominican’s long range passing game.

The Dominicans were semi-finalists at the last CAC games four years ago in Puerto Rico, finishing in 4th position while Guyana finished in 6th place.

Along with Guyana and the Dominican Republic, Bermuda and defending champions Trinidad and Tobago find themselves in group B.

Guyana is scheduled to meet Trinidad and Tobago in their second match of the competition on November 17th and complete their pool round on November 19th against Bermuda.

Hosts Mexico and Cuba are expected to be the top contenders in group A which also includes Barbados and Jamaica.

Squad: Alysa Xavier (GK), Ulrica Sutherland, Ashley DeGroot, Tiffany Solomon, Maria Munroe, Trisha Woodroffe, Aliyah Gordon, Marzana Fiedtkou, Leigh Sandison, Gabriella Xavier, Kerensa Fernandes, Chantelle Wales, Samantha Fernandes, Shebiki Baptiste, Tekeisha Deleon and Princessa Wilkie.
