[www.inewsguyana.com] – Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki-moon “took note” of the position of Venezuela in the border conflict between that country and Guyana and said he is in contact with both governments.

According to an article posted on El Universal, Ban met on Friday with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez, who gave him a letter from President Nicolás Maduro asking for the appointment of a UN “good officer” to solve the border controversy with Guyana.

“The Secretary General took note of the foreign minister’s views on the border dispute between Guyana and Venezuela and said the United Nations Secretariat was in contact with both governments on this issue.”

Besides meeting with the Venezuelan foreign minister, Ban received a phone call from Maduro on the same subject. Ban “acknowledged receipt of the letter from the president (Maduro) on the border dispute between Guyana and Venezuela and reaffirmed the willingness of the UN Secretariat to discuss a way forward with the two governments,” the communiqué added.

The statement did not anticipate what would be the UN’s reply to Venezuela’s request for the appointment of a “good officer” in order to overcome the conflict.

  1. As seems to be the information coming out of Guyana’s Foreign Ministry the UN needs to understand that the so-called Good Officer process is played out. We have to move on. The Good Officer process suits Venezuela because it adds credibility to that country’s bogus claim to Guyanese territory. However it slows down Guyana’s development as it adds a huge factor of uncertainty to potential investors.

  2. The UN should appoint a “Good Officer” . The Good Officer should read the treaty of 1899 and then the Good Officer should inform, in Spanish, the not so Good Presidente that the Essequibo was signed, sealed and delivered to Guyana 116 years ago and just because he wishes that the entire wealth of the region belongs to him and his people does not make it so.

The people of Venezuela need to replace their Government at earliest opportunity as Senor Maduro is not leading them in a good direction. He is ruling 50 years to late if he thinks a war over territory can work in the modern world. The USA would lay waste to the Venezuelan army and not sure the Brazilians would not as well. Both much more powerful and both will not watch a stronger Venezuelan run over Guyana.
