[www.inewsguyana.com] – After five weeks of industrial action by University of Guyana Workers under their unions – University of Guyana Senior Staff Association (UGSSA) and the University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU), the unions on Saturday February, 28 decided to call off their strike action.

This follows a meeting with the unions, the University’s Administration and the Ministry of Labour and according to a release from the President of the UGSSA Melissa Ifill, the unions and administration “verbally” agreed to sign the terms of resumption.

“The Unions were advised that the contents of both were endorsed by the Ministry of Finance and the University’s Negotiating Team. The agreements were not signed however since the Pro-Chancellor was unavailable,” said Dr Ifill in the statement.

The unions expect that the agreements will be signed on Monday March 02, 2015 by the Unions, the Vice Chancellor, the Pro Chancellor and a Ministry of Labour official.

This signing will clear the way for UG workers to resume duties and classes to recommence in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
