Servicemen awarded for outstanding service, good conduct and border defence

President David Granger, on Thursday, pinned medals on 120 servicemen of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) at a Medal Presentation Parade, held at the D’urban Park.

Braving the heavy rainfall, President Granger pinned 60 members of the GDF with the Military Efficiency Medal and the Border Defence Medal, while 60 members of the GPF were pinned with the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and the Border Defence Medal.

The Military Efficiency Medal is awarded to serving members of the GDF, who would have completed 10 years of continuous service with good conduct, and are approved by the Chief of Staff, following recommendations by the Medal Awards Committee.

The Border Defence Medal is awarded to serving members of the army and the police force, who would have had cumulative service on a Border location in excess of one year, and are approved by the Chief of Staff and Commissioner of Police, following recommendations by the Medal Awards Committee.

The Long Service and Good Conduct medal is awarded to serving members of the Disciplined Services, who have accumulated 15 years of continuous service with good conduct, and are approved by the Commissioner of Police, also following recommendations by the Medal Awards Committee.

The Medals are all made of nickel, are circular in shape and measure 35 millimetres in diameter.

    This has to be a joke… Defend what borders? When ? Where? How? Who?
    The GDF was created to create employment for blacks and to protect King Kabaka in the event of any uprising against the brute. GDF was never formed to defend Guyana. The press must ask Granger point blank if the GDF can protect Guyanese and fight the Brazilian and Venezuelan armies in the event of an invasion?
    Put the GDF man on the spot and let all Guyanese hears his answer.
    All Guyanese in and out of Guyana knows GDF cant protect Guyana from any invasion. The Government of the day will have to seek UN intervention.
    GDF is a waste of hard working taxpayers money.
    Disband that GDF thing now and create a powerful police force devoid of criminals and build larger prisons – pay good wages –hire people who want an honest wage as prison guard.
