This congress opens at a critical juncture for the party as it is the first congress since the party lost the General and Regional Elections in May 2015.

At the event, the Party is expected to elect a new 32-member Central Committee. Among the top runners for governance of the Party are Opposition Leader Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, Irfaan Ali, PPP Chief Whip Gail Teixeira, Dr Frank Anthony and Anil Nandall.

This congress comes at a critical juncture for the 66-year-old Party as a number of new youthful faces are expected to be elected to the frontline.

The front runners elected at this congress will be an indicator as to the direction the Party is heading in the selection of its presidential candidate for General Elections come 2020.

Critical discussions are expected on topical issues affecting the country, along with an in-depth analysis of the results of the 2015 elections.

Inews understands that a number of delegates from the Diaspora in the United States and Canada have arrived for this event.

Among those who will be attending the opening ceremony today are members of the diplomatic community and the Private Sector.
