Pitbull attack at Leonora leaves one dead, two others hospitalised

A vicious attack this morning by at least one pitbull dog that reportedly ran out of a yard at Leonora, West Coast Demerara has resulted in a man being mauled to death while two others are hospitalised.

Commander of the Leonora Police Station, Leslie James, confirmed the attack to INews and disclosed that one person is in custody. The person in custody is the brother of Marcelene Basdeo-Small. According to the Police, they are looking for Marcelene who is reportedly the owner of the pitbulls. But since she cannot be found, Police decided to arrest the brother, Marlon, who was in the yard at the time when ranks visited the scene of the attack. James said the Police also found that the yard in which the dogs came out from was “not secured”.

INews also visited the scene shortly after the deadly attack but reports are sketchy as to whether only one or all three of the pitbull dogs in the yard escaped and were involved in the attack.

The man mauled to death in the attack is said to be in his fifties and, according to residents in the area, he was a destitute.
