Pedal cyclist killed, struck down by drunk minibus driver

A 66-year-old labourer is now dead after he was struck down on the Herstelling Public road, East Bank Demerara on Tuesday afternoon by a drunk minibus driver.

Dead is Basil Rambarran of Farm, East Bank Demerara.

Based on information received, the accident occurred around 16:45hrs on the day in question, while a 44-year-old mini-bus driver of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was proceeding South along the western lane of the eastern carriageway in his vehicle- BLL4639.

Police reports indicated that Rambarran was utilizing a pedal cycle and allegedly rode across the road from west to east, when he was struck down. The elderly man fell to the road side and sustained visible injuries. He was later pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

The body is presently at the Lyken’s funeral parlour awaiting a post mortem examination which is expected to be conducted today.

The driver of the minibus was administered a breathalyzer test and found to “exceedingly above the legal limit.”

He is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
