One man is now dead and another critically injured following a smash-up between two trucks today (Tuesday) at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Reports are that around 04:30 hrs the driver of one of the vehicles (GGG 645) had parked his truck at the side of the road – not far from the Guyana National Stadium.

The driver exited his vehicle which had been laden with 10 slings of cement that he was transporting from one location to another on the EBD.

However, moments later, another truck which was said to be proceeding in the opposite direction  heading towards Georgetown, slammed into the parked vehicle (truck).

INews was told that the truck which had slammed into the stationery vehicle was empty except for its driver and porter.

According to a source, the porter, who has been identified as 51-year-old Dhanraj Datturam, died while receiving emergency treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Meanwhile, the driver of the truck is said to be hospitalised at the city hospital where he has suffered from a fractured left foot among other injuries.

Both the porter and the driver of the truck reside at Lot 146 Marshon Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

INews understands that the now dead man lived with the driver as part of his employment arrangement since he did not have another home to go to.

Meanwhile, investigations into the matter continue by police ranks with hopes that they can be able to conclude what caused the horrific accident and if charges should be laid against the injured driver. (Kristen Macklingam)
