Man admits to robbing victims at gunpoint; sentenced to 12 months jail

[www.inewsguyana.com] – John Martin of Leopold Street, Georgetown was charged with two counts of robbery under arm and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by Magistrates Fabayo Azore.

Martin pleaded guilty to both charges, one of which stated that today, Wednesday, August 20 at Main Street, Georgetown, being armed with a gun he robbed Monique Vossey of one Plum mobile cellular phone valued $12,000.

Particulars of the other charge stated that on Water Street, Georgetown, also being armed with a gun he robbed Miguel Sammy of cash $6,400.

Police Prosecutor Adduni Innis said that around 05:00 hrs, Vossey was with some friends in a 45 route minibus on Main Street when the convict pulled a weapon resembling a 9mm pistol from his pants waist and pointed it at her.

Subsequently, he relived her of the article mentioned in the charge and made good his escape. He was later found on Water Street and denied committing the act.

The Court heard that approximately half hour after committing the first offence, he attacked Sammy. Sammy was walking in the northern direction of Water Street, when the Martin confronted him at gun point and demanded money.

He attempted to escape but was apprehended by security personnel passing at the said time. The Court heard that the gun he used in the commission of the robbery was discovered to be a toy gun and both the cellular phone and the money were recovered in his possession.
