Labourer charged for unlawfully acquiring handcuffs, claiming to be Prison Officer

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Andre Singh was yesterday placed on $60,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on charges involving giving false information and unlawfully acquiring a pair of handcuffs.

The defendant, a labourer, who resides at DaSilva Street, Newtown Kitty, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to charge, which alleged that on October 17 at Brickdam Police Station, Georgetown, he gave to Corporal Devon Lowe false information in relation to his character, claiming to be a Principal 2 Prison Officer.

He pleaded guilty with explanation to the second charge, which alleged that on the same day at Brickdam Police Station, without lawful authority, he acquired from the military stores, one handcuff valued $4,500.

The defendant explained that the handcuff was given to him by his uncle, who is a retired Prison Officer and he has been carrying it for about three years.

Based on his explanation, a not guilty plea was recorded. Singh said he works in the interior and never had any trouble with the law before.

The matter was transferred before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond for trial on October 30.

  1. he had very very bad intent and the law must see it this way only..he had it for 3 yrs..then he must serve 6 years jail..
