The installation of parking meters in specific areas in and around Georgetown is set to begin in December of this year, according to a reliable source.

parkingAccording to the source who spoke with INews earlier today, all arrangements have been put in place for the machines to be installed next month with the intention of having the fees take effect from early 2017.

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is of the view that parking meters will serve to regulate traffic within Georgetown, while at the same time earn much needed revenues for the City through parking fees.

The Mayor and Town Clerk and other City officials had come under severe fire from numerous stakeholders, with many of them calling for the entire contract which was signed by Smart City Solutions  (SCS) to be scrapped.

Many persons were alarmed about the lack of transparency in the deal, with some saying it appeared to be a shady one aimed at exploiting the local populace.

Just recently, the parking meter project once again came into the spotlight when it was disclosed that a new director will be undertaking the project on behalf of SCS. However, the man who had identified himself as the Managing Director of SCS, the company contracted to execute the project, Ifa Kamau Cush, had claimed that he was not aware of the change.

Public Relations Consultant for SCS, Kit Nascimento, had indicated that Amir Oren, who is the International Director of Business Development, is now the major investor representing a consortium that has taken over the company and would be spearheading the project.
