Hundreds turn out at Education Rally

[www.inewsguyana.com] – As part of Education Month celebrations, the Ministry of Education today, Friday, September 19 held its annual ‘Rally and March for Education’ with most of the city school students marching through the streets of Georgetown.

The students converged at Parade Ground and walked through several streets before gathering into the National park, where Education Minister, Priya Manickchand and a number of other education officials delivered remarks.

Manickchand said the march aims to raise awareness to the masses about the importance of Education in any society, adding that collaboration in this area is key.

This year the ministry is focusing heavily on literacy in the public school system and has identified a number of initiatives that will be implemented to improve students’ literacy rate as they celebrate ‘Education Month’ under the theme: “Literate by Grade Four through Consistent Home, School and Community Involvement”.

The Ministry launched its five year draft strategic plan that seeks to improve the country’s literacy rate.

The plan has a number of components that will be implemented in the school system over the next five years and is expected to ensure literacy by Grade 4.

The Ministry says the initiative has to be complimented with the involvement of all stakeholders from the home to the classroom, she explained.
