Minister of State and Executive member of the People’s National Congress (PNC), Joseph Harmon has announced his candidature for the position of Chairman of the party, for which elections will be held at their Congress in August of this year.

Harmon in a brief statement said that the PNC holds Congress biannually at which all positions of leadership (inclusive of Party Leader and Central Executives) are up for voting.

“That is the democracy, which we practice. So every member of the Party can aspire to the highest office in our party and like many others, I am a member of the Party of longstanding and therefore have indicated that it is my desire and my interest in putting myself up as a candidate for the Chairmanship of the Party” said Harmon.

The current Chairman of the Party is Basil Williams, who is serving as the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs.

The PNC recently held its second General Council Meeting for the year on Saturday, May 19, with its current Chair calling for the party to be ready to put up with the resistance from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

In April of this year, Williams had hinted that he may run again for the chairmanship.

“I am servant of the PNC and a servant of my party. They know me. I have been working steadily throughout the years, and me and my comrades… so we don’t think that’s an issue,” he stated.

Moreover, the Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister said he was confident of winning the position again, although there have been reports that his performance has been weak.

At the last PNCR Congress, Williams contested the position of Chairman unopposed.
