Recent decisions taken by the incumbent Administration to reopen two sugar estates after initiating its closure, and its reluctance to review the oil contract signed with ExxonMobil, are clear indications that the Government is incompetent in handling the affairs of the country in an efficient manner.

This is according to Opposition leader Dr Bharrat Jagdeo who told a media conference today that these decisions have the potential to harm the lives of Guyanese in the future, and could set back the development that could take place in Guyana in future years.

The Skeldon and Enmore estates will reportedly be reopened by the end of March, in keeping with the State Minister’s recent pronouncements that Government will be keeping the divested estates running since it would make more economic sense for investors wanting to buy the estates to see them functioning.

Part of the package of keeping the estates functioning would therefore require some of the over 5000 workers who were sacked from the state owned Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) to reemployed.

The political Opposition and other stakeholders such as the Private Sector Commission had long called, even before the thousands of sugar workers were fired, for the Government to not close the estates but keep them running even as they look for avenues to privatize.
