Georgetown Prison Riot and Fire: “Incompetence of Govt on full display” – Opposition Leader

0

The Opposition Leader’s Office today (Monday) slammed the APNU/AFC Government for its “incompetence and lack of accountability” displayed in its response to yesterday’s riot and fire at the Georgetown Prisons.

In a statement issued earlier today, the Opposition Leader’s Office said that although there is a paucity of accurate information in the public domain about the events which took place at the Georgetown Prisons; what is clear at this point in time, is that last night, the nation once again witnessed an “outrageous spectacle of a bumbling, inept, incompetent Granger Government in full display”.

“All of those who are responsible for these tragic events including particularly the politicians must be held accountable,” the statement added.

The full statement follows:

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition extends its condolences to the family of the deceased prison officer who died tragically during the horrific developments at the Georgetown Jail, 12 Camp Street, on Sunday evening July 9th .

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition also extends its best wishes for the full recovery of those officers who were injured during the same incident and are currently hospitalised. Their services at that time, again attest to their commitment to law and order under dire situations.

Their sacrifices must be contrasted with the unbelievable incompetence and lack of accountability displayed by those with political responsibility for security at the City Jail and Law and Order in our country.

Although there is a paucity of accurate information in the public domain about the events which took place at the Georgetown Prison what is clear at this point in time is that last night the nation once again, witnessed an outrageous spectacle of a bumbling, inept, incompetent Granger Government in full display.

This incident was repeated not more than one year since a similar episode at the identical location revealed for all, the lack of planning and contingency that prevailed under the Granger Government’s watch. The final report and recommendations of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry that was commissioned after that event were kept secret by the administration. The nation is yet to learn what recommendation was accepted and implemented.

Conducting public policy in secrecy, in spite of public criticism, has now become a defining characteristic feature of this Government.

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition also recognises the human rights of both the convicted and remanded prisoners there who were exposed to the terrible event of July 9th and wishes to reiterate that the State bears full responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of those detained.

The Office of the Leader of the Opposition calls for a full disclosure of all aspects of this deplorable tragedy at the City Jail on July 9th 2017, and repeats its call for the same full disclosure of all aspects of the identical tragedy, loss of lives and destruction of property that occurred there in March  2016.

We urge all Guyanese to extend our full support to our Security Services as they restore Law and Order.

All of those who are responsible for these tragic events including particularly the politicians must be held accountable.
