Taxi Driver remanded for armed robbery

robbery[www.inewsguyana] – A Taxi driver attached to a popular  Taxi Service in Georgetown was today (Monday, September 15), remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine – Beharry on a robbery under arms charge.

Jesse Knight, 29, of Independence Boulevard, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on September 12 at Robb Street, being in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Desiree Fredericks of $10,000 cash.

Police Prosecutor Michael Grant opposed bail; citing the gravity of the offence and the fact that a firearm was used in the commissioning of the crime.

He told the Court that around 02:00 hours on the day in question, the virtual complainant (VC) was in her apartment when the defendant and another person entered through an open door and demanded that she hand over her cash and jewelry.

The VC reportedly told the duo that she only has $10,000 which they took and made good their escape.

Subsequently, she reported the matter to the Alberttown Police Station and the Police responded.

Investigations were carried out and the defendant was arrested in a taxi. He was taken to the Police Station where the VC positively identified him as one of the persons who robbed her.

Defence Counsel claimed that no Identification Parade (ID) was done and the case was transferred before Magistrate Judy Latchman for report and fixtures on September 30.
