The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) is calling on President David Granger to intervene and ensure that sugar workers receive bonuses similar to the tax free $25,000 approved for public servants working below $500,000.
The Union in a letter to the President made the call, bearing in mind that Sugar workers would not be receiving any Annual Production Incentive (API) payment this year.
A transcript of the letter is outlined below:
December 15, 2016
H.E. President David Granger President
Co-operative Republic of Guyana
Ministry of the Presidency,
Shiv Chandarpal Drive,
Your Government has approved a tax-free bonus of $25,000 for different categories of employees within the state-sector. Our Union believes it is a laudable effort though employees expected, at least, $50,000 similar to last year (2015).
Our Union, – the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), encouraged by this effort, is also seeking your kind intervention to ensure a similar bonus to sugar workers who, for the first time in sixty-four (64) years, would not receive any Annual Production Incentive (API) payment this year. Also, you are no doubt aware that this section of the state employees has not received any pay rise in 2015 and for 2016, so far.
A similar bonus to these workers would surely help, in some way, to offset expenses in the upkeep of their family, especially in this season of goodwill.
We shall appreciate your favourable consideration of our request.
