The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Five- Mahaica-Berbice is now preparing to provide financial support to a family of five who lost their home to a disastrous blaze last night.

Reports are that around 22:00hrs, 54-year-old Thakur Persaud, his wife 47-year-old Pulmattie Hunt and their three children were all asleep in their two story wooden and concrete home at lot 4 Section “A” D’Edwards Village, West Coast Berbice, when Hunt was awaken by the smell of smoke.

She immediately informed her husband, who upon inspection found the entire living room on fire.

Persaud, who is a cane harvester, quickly gathered his family and assisted them in escaping the burning house. The neighbours were informed and they contacted the fire service.

However, according to the family, they felt their home could have been saved if the Fire service, which was only moments away from the village, had reached earlier. The fire fighters reportedly arrived one hour after they were contacted.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but investigations are ongoing.
