A 24-year-old East Ruimveldt man was fined $50,000 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts by Magistrate Faith McGusty for theft.
Devon Baptiste pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on September 17, 2016, at Kitty, Georgetown, he stole one Samsung Galaxy cellphone valued $110,000, property of Sanjay Ramdhall.
Baptiste explained to the court that he snatched the phone out of frustration, since he could not find a job. The accused added that while running with the phone, he had a change of heart and opted to return the phone to the Virtual Complainant. He further explained that before he was successful in his remorseful act, he was apprehended.
The unrepresented defendant begged the court for leniency, claiming that he has learnt his lesson and pointing to the fact that the phone was returned to the Virtual Complainant.
Magistrate McGusty imposed the fine, noting that she considered the man’s age and the fact that the phone was recovered. She cautioned him about irrational actions.
