[www.inewsguyana.com] – Diabetes is one of the leading cause of deaths in Guyana and it affects all ethnic groups. Most persons suffer from Type 2 diabetes which is the adult form and there are a small number of young children who are affected.

Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health Dr. Shamdeo Persaud says close to 60,000 persons are receiving treatment at either public or private hospitals.

However, that number might not represent the actual persons affected because some persons might have stopped treatment or occasionally go for treatment.

It was noted that there are currently 74 children who are being treated for Type 1 diabetes. According to Dr. Persaud, diabetes also affects Amerindians which was not the case many years ago.

In this regard, he explained that the lifestyle of many persons is a contributing factor to the increase in the number of diabetic cases.
