The contract for the construction of a pedestrian overhead crossing at Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara has been awarded to S. Jagmohan, Hardware Supplies & Construction Services.

This is according to State Minister, Joseph Harmon who earlier today said that the contract was awarded to the company by the National Procurement and Tender Administration board (NPTAB) in the sum of US$364,727.

This announcement comes as an addition to the previous assertions by Government to have overhead pedestrian crossings constructed at Houston, Peter’s Hall and Eccles, all on the East Bank of Demerara.

Moreover, Harmon had announced on March 17, 2017 that a contract in the sum of US$1,034,326 had been awarded to B&J Civil Works to commence works on the overhead crossings at the Harbour Bridge intersection at Peter’s Hall, Eccles and Houston.

On May 20, 2016, just after the unveiling of the Independence Arch at Agricola, the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson had disclosed plans to create three pedestrian overpasses, as well as a fly-over at Diamond in an effort to reduce road fatalities and congestion on the East Bank.

These areas were selected after studies showed that they held the highest concentration of  pedestrian movement on the East Bank of Demerara.

It was also disclosed that the overhead pedestrian crossing constructions aim to ensure maximum security of pedestrians who are more than often, the victims of accidents.
