[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) received over $5 million RMB [over US$810,000] in military aid from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China today (Wednesday, August 20), as part of a 2011 agreement.

Among the items received are: one ambulance, three front end loaders, one excavator, one generator, and two inflatable craft with outboard engines.

Present to witness the handing over from Major General Kong Li to Brigadier Mark Philips were President Donald Ramotar, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Zhang Limin and Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues – Birkett.

Army Chief, Brigadier Phillips said the Force is happy to receive the equipment and expressed appreciation.

He explained that it was part of 2011 agreement; recalling a 2012 agreement where the Chinese military has pledged $10 million RMB in military aid and more recently the 2014 agreement which was signed yesterday to the tune of US$4.8M.Chinese Army 1

Meanwhile, Major General Kong, who is heading the Chinese delegation, said this is another step in building the long and historic friendly relation Guyana and China share.

He said there lies ahead a sustained future of relations which will see increased military aid being donated to the Guyana Defence Force.

He made it clear that there were no political implications with the donations even as he pledged continued support to the local defence force.

President Donald Ramotar complimented his Chinese counterpart’s sentiments; saying that over the last 42 years the two nations have strengthened its relationship in practically all aspects of life.

The Commander in Chief said he has no doubt that the equipment will service the Force well, taking into consideration Guyana’s vast terrain and the Army’s diverse roles.

He said China’s contribution has increased greatly across the world; adding that it has become the main driver of the international economy.

The Guyanese Head of State says he looks forward to building even greater relationship with the Chinese.

  1. That’s nice. But just a reminder, they own almost 70% of the real estate in New York, they contributed about 8 billion to bail out the banks in America in 2008, and a lot more than Americans are aware of;. They are a resourceful people, and can make a dollar out of a nickel. Point is, since Guyana don’t seem to have two nickels to rub together, they’re hands are literally in the tiger’s mouth.
