Cabinet has approved over $58M in contracts for works to be carried out at the Mazaruni Prison so as to facilitate the transfer of prisoners from the Georgetown Prisons.

State Minister, Joseph Harmon told media operatives on Thursday that contracts in the sums of $28,141,000 and $30,447,000 were awarded to A Nazeer and Sons Contracting and R Kissoon Contracting Services respectively, for the rehabilitation and extension process to begin.

The Minister explained that presently the Mazaruni Prison sits on about 20 acres of land. It caters for living accommodations for the prison officers, blocks for inmates and land for agricultural development.

He expressed hope that once the construction works are completed, the facilities for prisoners will be improved and security will be heightened.

In the past, Government indicated its willingness to transfer prisoners to the Mazaruni facility so as to ease the overcrowding in the Georgetown prisons.
