Boat captain feared dead after pirate attack forces him, crew overboard

A 44-year-old boat captain is feared dead after he went missing in the Corentyne River following an alleged attack by two masked pirates on Tuesday afternoon.

The missing man has been identified as Mahadeo Ramdial called Chico of Kilcoy, Chesney.

Based on information received, the captain along with two crew members were attacked at approximately 16:30hrs. Inews understands that the perpetrators-who are still at large- pounced on the unsuspecting victims with a weapon in their possession. They [suspects] reportedly stole the victims catch, and the 40hp engine attached to the vessel they [victims] were travelling in.

This online publication was told that the attackers then commanded the captain and his crew to get into their [attackers’] boat. Upon doing so, the two suspects reportedly ordered the three to “jump overboard.”

While the crew members complied, the captain –Ramdial- was hesitant. As such, the suspects allegedly lashed him to the head, and then pushed him out into the Corentyne River.

Inews was informed that the crew members reportedly told officers that their captain being pushed into the water was the last time they saw him. They indicated that after searching for a short while, they swam towards a shore in the vicinity of Tain Settlement, Berbice and were able to board a vessel located 100ft away from land.

A report was made and a search for Ramdial was launched. Thus far, it has proven to be unfruitful.  (Ramona Luthi)
