[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Berbice Bridge Company Inc.(BBCI) this afternoon informed that the bridge has resumed full operation following a malfunction last Friday.

A release from the company stated that “after several test runs, the problem has been fixed and the bridge is now operating normally.”

On Friday last, just one month shy of its sixth anniversary, the bridge encountered a problem after retracting for three vessels to transit.

It was later found that the controller on the west side that closes the bridge was faulty and while it immediately resulted in scores of stranded commuters, including school children the problem was temporarily rectified allowing for vehicular traffic to traverse.

The Company’s engineers and technicians then worked assiduously on Saturday to successfully repair and reinstall the controller; however, river traffic was still affect up to Sunday.

“Always mindful of the safety of the public, numerous tests were conducted on the entire control system which proved to be a time consuming but necessary exercise, BBCI assured.

The company said it is testament to the major role that the bridge plays in the everyday lives of commuters generally and Berbicians in particular.

“As our sixth anniversary approaches, we promise to redouble our commitment to ensure that our commuters receive the best in service,” the statement noted; adding that “the Berbice Bridge was built with the latest state-of-the-art technology and we are proud that our engineers and technicians were able to trouble-shoot and solve the problem without having to bring in help from the builders.”

BBCI apologized for the inconvenience suffered.
