The back-to-school flea market concept introduced by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) will commence today (Sunday). Vendors located at Parliament View Mall, and other small entrepreneurs selling school related items will be given preferential treatment to take up positions between Cummings and Alexander Streets on Regent Street.

back to schoolThe three-block area will be closed to vehicle traffic on Saturdays and Sundays when vendors display their items.  The Council has noted however that all persons interested in being part of the flea market must register with the Clerk of Markets to ensure the process is done in a fair, orderly and accountable manner.

Town Clerk Royston King said that the back-to-school flea market will last until school reopens in September. He said the flea market is also a pilot concept. “This pilot concept of a flea market is to see how it works and whether this is something that can be good for the city.”

The Town Clerk noted however that those selling at the flea market are responsible for keeping the area clean and tidy. He said persons will “take up all belongings and garbage and remove from the street as soon as the selling period is over.”

The flea market will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. King warned that vendors could lose their vending spots if they do not adhere to the rules put in place for the smooth function of the flea market.
