Anna Regina woman to spend 3 years behind bars for narco trafficking

Amanda Spellen of Lot 14 Anna Regina, in Region Two (Pomeroon- Supenaam) was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined G$30,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.

The trial into her matter concluded on March 21, when the presiding Magistrate found her guilty after the testimony of several Police witnesses.

The mother of one was charged on March 4, 2016, for trafficking in narcotics. She was remanded on the charge; however, her legal aid Attorney Valensia Yansen was successful in securing bail in the High Court.

It is alleged that on March 3, 2016, during a Police drug campaign, Spellen sold 3.5 grams of cocaine to a Police Constable. During the trial she denied the allegation, alleging that the Police wanted to frame her. The substance was weighed and confirmed as cocaine by the Police.

Police also stated that they photocopied the money that was used to pay for the drugs and when Spellen was approached, she was found with the identical money that corresponded with that of the photocopies. The woman explained that she had received the money from two boys she sold bag strings too. She told the court that she has a baby and she is presently unemployed and would love to be there for her son, who is very attached to her.

After the sentence was read, Spellen was taken to prison.
