A 78-year-old woman was brutally beaten and robbed by two men at her home in Eccles, East Bank Demerara on Sunday morning.

The injured woman has been identified as Rohnee Mithuram, a pensioner.

Speaking with Inews, the woman recalled being awoken at around 03:00hrs on Sunday after feeling a pillow being pressed to her face.

In tears, the visibly battered pensioner said that two men began to beat her across her body, and punched her in the nose and eyes, causing her to bleed profusely before demanding that she turn over her cash and valuables.

Mithuram said that even though she directed the men to the only cash she had –amounting to $6,000- and gave them her three gold rings, the bandits still continued their assault on her, demanding that she turn over more valuables.

The two men reportedly kicked the elderly woman in her rib region several times, before fleeing the home with a bag containing her passport and identification card.

The 78-year-old said she immediately ran outside of her home, screaming and crying for assistance, however, her neighbours were asleep.

She recounted that it wasn’t until 05:30hrs the morning, when a pandit came to pick flowers from her yard, that she told him what transpired. As such, he contacted her nieces who resided on the public road in Eccles, and the police were informed.

The elderly woman was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre to be treated and subsequently discharged.

As she spoke to this publication Mithuram complained of neck pains she received from being choked and manhandled by the bandits.

Her eyes were bloodshot and her nose was black and visibly swollen.

No one has yet been apprehended for the heinous act as investigations are ongoing.
