5 years imprisonment for unlicensed driver who killed former Chief Librarian

[www.inewsguyana.com] – A 24 – year – old unlicensed driver was today convicted for the death of the former Chief Librarian during an accident that occurred on last Christmas Eve Day.

Odida Underwood of Guyhoc Park, Georgetown, was found guilty as charged for the offence before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and sentenced to serve five years imprisonment.

He was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving the vehicle without the consent of its owner and without third party insurance coverage and without a valid driver’s licence.

The Court heard that on December 24, 2013, he drove motorcar PPP 8655 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Gillian Thompson.

The Prosecution facts stated that on the day in question, Underwood was proceeding north along of Shiv Chanderpaul Drive and failed to stop at the intersection, resulting in the collision with a motor van.

Thompson was seated in the front seat of the motor van which slammed into a concrete culvert. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Underwood was represented by Adrian Thompson.
