200 children receive gifts at Rahaman’s Park Christmas tree light up

ray-parkThe Christmas spirit was ushered in last evening at Rahaman’s Park where 200 children received gifts from Santa Claus and  Mrs. Claus at the Annual Rahaman’s Park, Christmas tree light up.

The annual event attracted children  from surrounding villages.

The tree at Houston is an attraction for persons traversing the East Bank of Demerara, especially at nights.

The crowd was amazed as the 60-foot tree with 5000 multi-coloured  bulbs which were illuminated  by Minister of Business with responsibility for Tourism, Dominic Gaskin.

Minister Gaskin in brief remarks told persons gathered that they are in a season where their attitude and behaviour change “we become kinder and nicer as we take into consideration those who are less fortunate and especially the children,” Minister Gaskin said.

The Minister added that the tree is erected at a good spot, which is ideal for welcoming persons to the capital city, Georgetown.

Ray Rahaman, the organiser of the the event for the past 11 years, said that it started out with just 15 persons and now there are over 1000. The   tree was at 12 feet and is now 60 feet. Rahaman explained that the gifts are complements of Gafoors Houston Complex and China Trading, while Chico Sweets (Beharry Company) was on hand to share  sweets to the children.

Rahaman said that the 60ft tree is the tallest in the Caribbean.
